Latinx Film Cultures

Latinx Film Cultures

The course will be a historical and theoretical survey of films by or starring artists of Latin American origin based in the countries of the North Atlantic. Organized under the provisional umbrella term of “Latinx Cinema,” the screenings will focus primarily on films by the Chicanx, Nuyorican, and Cuban exile communities living in the United States, but our reach will also extend to diasporic cultural formations beyond the U.S., such as in Canada or Europe. The aim of the class is to recover a Latinx film culture beyond the yoke of mere authorship, revisiting the work of film professionals, performers, critics, intellectuals, and audiences to make possible the idea of a Latinx cinema. Rejecting its subsumption into the broader category of Latin American cinema, this course seeks to recover Latinx cinema as a unique expression of film culture and thread its historical development across time and space.
