2023 AIFIS-MSU Conference on Indonesian Studies - Parallel Session 10
Session Date/Time: Sat Jul 15, 2023, 8:00 AM - 9:30 AM ET
This roundtable discussion focuses generally on the potential to develop more global education programs in Indonesia. The approach emphasizes interdisciplinarity and seeks to establish reciprocal and sustainable partnerships between global academic institutions and partners in Indonesia. While Indonesian students may have a good understanding of American culture and are engaged in learning English, students in the United States have little or no knowledge of Indonesia. Given the global importance of Indonesia and the broader region, US colleges have a responsibility to provide students with opportunities to study the Malay archipelago.
Over the last several years, Michigan State faculty in the Muslim Studies Program, the Global Studies in the Arts and Humanities Program, the College of Education, and the Asian Studies Center have developed partnerships to advance several projects on topics ranging from the Indonesian Islamic architectural heritage to Indonesian environmental justice to education abroad programs for US students. The round table consists of three scholars from UIN Jambi and one from MSU. UIN Jambi participants will discuss the various efforts of their International Office to expand its operations and actively provide unique opportunities for international students to connect virtually and in person with the UIN Jambi community. Specific topics covered in the roundtable include the following: International Students Perspective at an Islamic State University (Tira); Challenges and Opportunities of COIL with MSU Global Studies program for Indonesian Students (Dion); Global Immersion Program: Challenges and Opportunities (Tanti); and MSU Education Abroad and Environmental Justice in Sumatra (Salah).
