2023 Gender and Sexuality Moot Court Competition (GSMCC) hosted by Michigan State University College of Law
Final Round and Awards Ceremony
This video contains the final round argument of the 2023 GSMCC competition between University of Minnesota Law School (Team 2) and Gonzaga University School of Law (Team 18).
The final round was argued in front of Moot Court Justices:
- Elizabeth L. Gleicher, Chief Judge, Michigan State Court of Appeals, Second District
- Joan
W. Howarth, Dean Emerita, Michigan State University College of Law, and
Distinguished Visiting Professor of University of Nevada, Las Vegas
- Jay Kaplan, Nancy Katz & Margo Dichtelmiller LGBTQ + Rights Project Staff Attorney, ACLU of Michigan
Advocates
will argue two issues in this case. The first issue pertains to
judicial recusal regarding a judge based on religious bias and financial
ties. The second issue concerns the clash between individual liberty
and religious exemptions to a newly enacted law protecting reproductive
freedom. Specifically, whether a not-for-profit religiously affiliated
healthcare system may evade compliance with a neutral and generally
applicable state law based on religious belief. As usual in moot court
hypotheticals, many facts are probable but fictional.
Following the
final round is the 2023 GSMCC Award Ceremony that details the
participating teams, Best Brief and Top Oral Advocates and Final Round
Winner.
