Presentation by Dr. Freidhoff on February 18th in 133F Erickson Hall.
Introduction. Online K-12 learning is growing rapidly across the country. Michigan is one of the leading states in supporting online learning options. During the 2013-14 school year, over 76,000 Michigan public school students participated in online learning. On February 4th the Michigan Virtual University released the most comprehensive report to date on K-12 online learning in Michigan. This data-rich report shows the continuing rapid growth in online enrollments by K-12 students, which increased 38% over the previous year. Although the majority of enrollments are at the high school level, the rate of increase is highest at the elementary level. The completion rates for online courses are, not surprisingly, lower than the 89% course completion rate in regular public school classrooms, and the completion rates vary on various dimensions.
