Speaker: Dr. Chris Dent, CEng FIET FIES SMIEEE FORS
Personal Chair in Industrial Mathematics, School of

Topic: Are reliability metrics suitable for reliability analysis?
Date and Time: Wednesday, March 19, 2025, 11:00 am – 12:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Abstract: This title is inspired by the question “Are reliability metrics suitable for _resilience_ analysis?” posed in a previous task force meeting. Based on Great Britain experience, it will demonstrate that standard metrics used for reliability studies may not be as suitable for these studies as is often thought, variously because of limited historic experience of extreme conditions, or because they do not consider variability of outcome. This will be used to illustrate the challenges faced in specifying metrics and performing decision support analysis for resilience.
Literature: The talk will be primarily based on the following recent papers: “Severe compound events of low wind and cold temperature for the British power system” https://rmets.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/met.2219, “Resource adequacy and capacity Procurement: Metrics and decision support analysis”, https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/09576509241292100
Bio: Chris Dent is Professor of Industrial Mathematics in the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh. He has worked for many years on resource adequacy risk assessment with the GB System Operator, and more recently has worked with multiple companies on assessing risks from climate change, including on the UK’s national Climate Change Risk Assessment report. He is a Chartered Engineer, and a Fellow of the Operational Research Society, and the IET and the Institution of Engineers in Scotland.
