(Instructor) So we want to look at the forward stroke in a little more detail and Trey's just going to paddle in and we're just going to give a chat about what he's doing and some of the things that we're going to see. So the first thing we want to look at is just where that blade is entering the water and is it fully submerged or not fully submerged? So obviously we want that thing all the way in the water doing what it's designed to do, pulling us forward. We'll let him spin around and... (Trey) Let me turn around. (Instructor) Yeah, just paddle away from us. So now let's take a look at the back of his life jacket. And pay attention to how much it moves side to side as he's paddling forward because that's a really good indicator whether he's arm paddling or using his core. If that, you can kinda see his, that little patch on his PFD is moving quite a bit. So that is a hundred percent guaranteed that he's using his core to drive the boat and not his arms. If that PFD little emblem just stayed stationary, you know that person is doing a hundred percent arm paddling. Nice vertical stroke, so that top hand stays somewhere between shoulder and eyeball height, makes the paddle travel in a line straight back from the boat driving us forward. And just look at the efficiency of his strokes. So he's not sprinting fast. There's not a lot of noise coming off the paddle. He's not pulling on that paddle until the blade's fully submerged. Then on his final pass, it's where is he looking, it's not down, it's out in terms of where he's going. Then, as it comes on a side view, just look at where the paddle exits the water. So now we just want to look at where his blade is going into the water and coming out of the water. So when he first plants it, it's going pretty much up where his toes are inside the boat and it's coming out pretty much by his hip, so it's a relatively short stroke. So, in by that second, somewhere between the two foot brace bolts there and out just past his hip. Okay, that's good.
